Prescott Valley Public Library: Finding the Heart of Your Memoir, August 16, 2025, (In Person program)- Pre-registration required.
Prescott Valley Public Library will be offering Finding the Heart of Your Memoir on August 16, 2025. Join us for this free writing workshop, where you'll explore two powerful tools to help you distill your experiences into a focused, emotionally resonant narrative. One of the most challenging things for memoirists to do is find the story they’re telling (out of a lifetime of stories!) A memoir is a single lens on an aspect of life not an entire biography. Memoirists must learn to distill their work. They must understand the relevance of the events they choose to dramatize to the internal growth trajectory of the narrator. In other words, they must learn to ask “who cares?” ruthlessly about key events in their lives. Not a task for the faint of heart! In this workshop, we’ll look at two powerful tools to help you find the heart of your memoir, and if you aren’t sure yet what your story is, the tools can help you understand what’s missing! Whether you’re just starting your memoir or already have several drafts, these exercises will strengthen your understanding of your work. Bring something to write with and on! This workshop is for adults only. Laraine Herring has an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Counseling Psychology. She is a tenured professor of psychology and creative writing at Yavapai College and has been teaching since 1993. She has conducted webinars for Corporeal Writing, Creative Nonfiction Magazine, Phoenix Author’s Group and more, and has earned grants through the Arizona Artists Roster. Her work has won the Barbara Deming Award for Women in Fiction and her memoir, A Constellation of Ghosts made a number of top ten lists in 2021. Pre-registration is required.
